"I am willing"

By: Wei Wei Chan

Oh what the Lord would do to bring us close.

Artist's Notes:

God's heart always was for us to be with Him for He is always with us. But just like the thorns on a rose, the sin nature that humanity have gained through the fall have completely separated us from the very core nature of God. Sin is like a disease that slowly eats us up on the inside, and there is no cure for it. The thorns on the rose represents how our nature as humanity has become quite hostile, towards God, each other and ourselves. It causes us to wilt to our end. But the Lord changed the end of that by His mercy and love towards us. Jesus came to abolish the dreading end and completely turn it around like a great author in it's finest plot twist of a story. He rose up from the grave and paved a way, inviting all to join on this new way of life.

...And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are Willing, You can make me clean." Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying,
"I am willing, be cleansed."
Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Matthew 8:1-3

I was inspired by the story, when the Leper came to ask Jesus to cleanse him. It is quite a metaphorical image of what sin does to us. Just like how leprosy is a disease that mutilates the body and it distorts the original biological part of the body, the sin nature mutilates our original nature that was created in the image of God (see genesis 1:26). God is holy, and we are to be holy and to walk in righteousness. But wickedness and sin distorted the origin of our created purpose which cause us to wilt like a dying rose. It cuts us off from the source of life, which is God Himself. Having been cut off, we are wilting in the agony and wages of sin. However, the good news is, God is willing to save us in the midst of it all. And that is through Jesus Christ.

"Remember that you were at the time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and the strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
For He Himself is our PEACE, who has made us both one & has
broken down in HIS FLESH the dividing wall of HOSTILITY [like the thorns] by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man in place of two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the CROSS,
thereby KILLING the HOSTILITY. And He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through HIM we have the access in
one spirit to the Father. "

 (Ephesians 2:12-18)

Let us draw near to God and be "Rose" again just as Jesus was.
Because He was willing to hold you close.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
 Romans 6:23

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10
